Processor
PC-SPAN ® version 4 will run on any hardware capable of running Windows 95, 98, NT ver.4.0, or Windows 2000. Execution times will be greatly affected by the speed of the processor. As a practical matter, most users with processors running at 200 MHz or faster will find PC-SPAN's calculations run very quickly.

PC-SPAN version 4 software requires:

  • Microsoft Windows 95, 98 or Windows NT 4.0 or above,
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or above.

Even though PC-SPAN requires Internet Explorer 5.0 or above to be installed on the computer, it does not require it to be the default browser. You can have, for example, Netscape's browser installed on your computer and use it for Internet browsing and any other application.

Memory
PC-SPAN holds all data in the currently open SPAN® document in memory. If available memory is insufficient at any point, Windows will "swap" memory to disk. As such, PC-SPAN performance is greatly affected by the amount of available RAM.

As a practical matter, for most users, 32M of RAM will be an absolute minimum, while 64M of RAM will provide good performance. For users desiring the fastest execution times, with the largest amounts of data, 128M to 256M, or more, is desirable.

If you are using PC-SPAN under Windows NT please make sure that you have sufficient space allocated for the page file. The exact space you will need depends on the amount of RAM you have as well as applications you run simultaneously with PC-SPAN. We recommend setting the page file size to at least 200 MB, and increasing it if you get "Out of memory" error messages while the program.

Disk Space
Installation of PC-SPAN itself will take about 10M of disk space.

As described below, PC-SPAN will also install Microsoft's DCOM and MDAC components. The exact amount of additional space required will vary depending on what is already installed on your PC. In addition, Microsoft's Internet Explorer 5.0 will have its own disk space requirements, which vary greatly depending on the options you choose. As a practical matter, most users will require at least 50M of free space prior to installation.

Please note that the installation program checks for the version number of all shared DLLs and OCXs it installs. If the same or newer version of the file is present on the system PC-SPAN will not attempt to overwrite it.

Uninstalling PC-SPAN
PC-SPAN can be easily uninstalled using standard Add/Remove Programs dialog in Windows Control Panel.
